Welcome, bloggers and other GIPC'ers working on the 5k wellness challenge!

This blog is for anyone interested in increasing their wellness, especially those who want to take on the 5k challenge. You define the nature of that challenge -- run, jog, walk. Maybe your goal is to jog 1 mile rather than 3 , or simply to walk regularly. That's great, too. Anything you do that gets you off the couch! (Remember to check with your physician before undertaking any new exercise.)

Check in here for support and join the conversation. There will be a generic item posted every day so that you can post comments on topics of interest related to the challenge. Questions, comments, tips, exciting discoveries or achievements? Record them here for community response. Looking for a walking or jogging partner? Post it.

If you are on the home page, click on the notation "x Comments" to go to a page where you can post your item. If you click on the posting for the day as listed on the Archive on the right side of the page, a Comment box will show automatically, as will all the comments previously made.

Let's take ourselves out for a spin and see what we can do!

March 16, 2011 Taking it to the streets....

I always feel safer running on the bike path when it is available, but the melting snow has created some big puddles. There are parts of the bike path that are now under water and I am forced to the street to keep dry. The rule of the road for runners/walkers is to proceed against traffic. Most drivers are considerate and allow extra room on their right when they see runners. Thank you, nice drivers!

Sunday, March 13...at least it is dry...

The sky looked like a winter storm today, but it was just some angry clouds. My sister and I ran today, it is always good to have a running partner. We dressed for the chill, so we were okay, and our 2.2 miles went by quickly. We tested out the course yesterday. We tried to run, but would get caught up in conversation and had to slow down to talk. The course is in good shape. The weather report for the week is favorable and the forecast for 3/19 (event day) is cold, but no snow or rain predicted. Perfect!!

Thursday, March 3

The sun keeps shining. Yay! Spring must really be on its way. Runners are out on the roads again.

Okay, we all know how changeable the weather is this time of year in Michigan. Cross your fingers, think happy thoughts, and dress in layers. The C-2-5k will take place, rain or shine. If the roads are not safe underfoot, we will have an indoor walk before breakfast.

Check out the cool shirts at the crossroads. Sign up, sign the waiver, and then come for the fun and fellowship!

Tuesday, March 1 -- Let the Sun Shine

March has rolled in with bright sunshine, a welcome relief from the second snowiest February in Michigan history. Let's hope the roads and sidewalks clear and the temperature moderates even more. Dress in layers and get moving outdoors, for a real change of pace! Get the endorphins going!

Sunday, February 27th -- 3 weeks and counting

We are rounding the curve into the final stretch up to the 5k challenge event on March 19th. We hope that you have been getting up and moving a little more than usual.

This is meant to be a fun family-type event in which we ask ourselves to do a little extra for our health. If that means running, great. Walking, great. Getting up early on a Saturday to cheer on your favorite runner/jogger/walker -- great!

After the event, stay for breakfast, courtesy of the Deacons. To be sure they have enough food prepared, please make a reservation for breakfast.

So check out the information at the Crossroads and join us on the 19th!

Tuesday, Feb. 22. Winter Blasted...

Super cold this morning, 1 degree with the wind-chill factored in. Many layers helped, only my eyes were exposed. My neighborhood got a visit from the snow plows last night, so the streets were somewhat cleared, but that layer of packed snow was tricky. Still, it was a good run, my dog liked it and I like that my run behind me for the day!
