Welcome, bloggers and other GIPC'ers working on the 5k wellness challenge!

This blog is for anyone interested in increasing their wellness, especially those who want to take on the 5k challenge. You define the nature of that challenge -- run, jog, walk. Maybe your goal is to jog 1 mile rather than 3 , or simply to walk regularly. That's great, too. Anything you do that gets you off the couch! (Remember to check with your physician before undertaking any new exercise.)

Check in here for support and join the conversation. There will be a generic item posted every day so that you can post comments on topics of interest related to the challenge. Questions, comments, tips, exciting discoveries or achievements? Record them here for community response. Looking for a walking or jogging partner? Post it.

If you are on the home page, click on the notation "x Comments" to go to a page where you can post your item. If you click on the posting for the day as listed on the Archive on the right side of the page, a Comment box will show automatically, as will all the comments previously made.

Let's take ourselves out for a spin and see what we can do!

Sunday, February 27th -- 3 weeks and counting

We are rounding the curve into the final stretch up to the 5k challenge event on March 19th. We hope that you have been getting up and moving a little more than usual.

This is meant to be a fun family-type event in which we ask ourselves to do a little extra for our health. If that means running, great. Walking, great. Getting up early on a Saturday to cheer on your favorite runner/jogger/walker -- great!

After the event, stay for breakfast, courtesy of the Deacons. To be sure they have enough food prepared, please make a reservation for breakfast.

So check out the information at the Crossroads and join us on the 19th!

  1. Jared and I are both participating in the 5k run, Jackson will be in the nursery (jan said she will have someone) can I have my older two bring their bikes and follow with us. I'd hate to have them sit inside. Exercise is needed after a long winter, presuming there is no snow.
    Thanks a bunch, Rochelle Blum

  2. Rochelle -- It's great that you and your husband will be there for the 5k. For safety reasons, we are not allowing bikes, rollerblades, strollers, or anything else with wheels. This is indicated on the waiver we will ask you to sign, as well (I believe) on the sign-up sheet. We can make sure that the babysitter or one of the teen volunteers brings the kids out for the finish line. Then we hope you will all stay for breakfast.

  3. After I posted that I kinda figured...The only thing we've signed is the sheet at the crossroads, has the waiver been sent out, or do we just sign it that morning. As far as the $5 do we pay on the 19th. We will be staying for breakfast, we will sign up this sunday. Thanks a lot...I've been running, joined ballys a few weeks ago..I'm up to 2 1/2 miles, so almost to 3.1...I hope to run the whole thing. Jared not so sure about :) But we are excited about it. Thanks for the opportunity.

  4. Look for waivers at the Crossroads soon, or at the event. We are having the final wording reviewed by a lawyer. Good for you on your fitness routine. If you can do 2.5 miles, it seems likely you can do 3.1. One thing about treadmills, I advise that you increase the incline one or two notches from flat to simulate the increased difficulty of running on actual pavement. If you have to walk part of the way, give yourself a hearty pat on the back for going the distance. Ditto for Jared. It's all good!
